Acquired Brain Injury Assessment
Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) Assessments assess the client's cognitive/perceptual and physical impairments and the related impact the impairment has on their functional activities.
The assessment involves:
- Client's functional strengths and weaknesses
- Barriers to achieving maximum independence
- Administration of standardized assessment tools
- Collateral interviews with family members and others central to the client's life
- Observations of the client engaged in real world tasks
Recommendations are clearly linked to assessment findings and include specific goals, timelines and projected reassessment dates. They include cognitive rehabilitation which is aimed at restoring functions and learning how to adapt to and compensate for the losses associated with brain injury. Often, individuals will need to learn strategies to deal with their difficulties and/or adapt their environment to compensate for their problem areas arising from the brain injury. The goal of treatment is to return to functional levels of activity, as much as possible.
